Why do we have Chapel?

Chapel is a weekly version of a Church Service, which is for growing and strengthening the faith of our students. It is for worshipping God, and for considering spiritual matters. As the Chapel is held in the building used by the Papanui Seventh-Day Adventist Church, the students come to realise that a church building and Worship service is not a scary place and time, but can be friendly, welcoming, and desirable.

What do we do there?

The students themselves are fully involved in all aspects of the Chapel service, which lets them experience and gain confidence in public speaking, performance, and leadership.

There are songs - some hymns, but mostly contemporary Christian music (students' favourites), usually played and led by students.

There is prayer, mostly by students, for whatever the hearts of those praying decide is important for that day/week.

There are sometimes dramas, conveying some spiritual truth or aspect of Christian life.

There is a message - a short sermon - from guest speakers, pastors, teachers, or students. This often is related to the 'value of the week', or other relevant issues for the students.

StArT uP!

An exciting initiative this year - StArT uP! is an opportunity for students to be involved and use their God given talents for Him! Each class is given one chance a term to take the 10 minute StArT uP! slot in High School Chapel, and can do anything - drama, special item, quiz, activities.... you name it, it's probably been done!!! Under the direction of their teachers, each year level has performed some amazing StArT uP! productions they can be very proud of. They are also God centred and God focused - this is a requirement. With each class performing at a higher standard each week, it has created some healthy competitiveness, with classes trying to do something 'even better' than last week! God's Name is truly glorified. Well done to all students and staff who continue to creatively produce awesome StArT uP! programs.

CHAPELS

You are welcome to pop in anytime and check out our Chapel programs. There are interesting and dynamic speakers - from pastors or teachers or leaders from the community, and sometimes special guests from overseas. A Chapel program consists of a welcome and birthdays by Pastor Tracey, announcements from teachers, Praise and Worship music, StArT uP!, a speaker, and a thank you on behalf of the school from a Year 13 Prefect. Pop in sometime and praise the Lord with us! Make sure you sign in at the school office first.

Daniel Carter visits Christchurch Adventist School

Tuesday 21st July was a day most Christchurch Adventist School students will never forget! Famous NZ rugby player Daniel Carter and CanTeen officials visited CAS and spoke for the Tuesday Chapel program. The school won the visit through the bandanna challenge run last year by CanTeen, a NZ organisation supporting young people with cancer. CAS became involved in CanTeen after Year 9 student Bridget Grady developed Leukaemia in 2007, and wanted to further support her and others dealing with cancer through CanTeen.

Daniel Carter was greeted by student leaders, School Principal Danny Carrasco and Board of Trustees Chairman Pr Neil Thompson. During the Chapel program the rugby great was interviewed by Bridget and older sister Millie with questions that students had written. Daniel also presented a speech, encouraging students to do their best in school and achieve their goals. It was a privilege for the BoT Chairman to have a prayer for Daniel and also for the great work CanTeen does. Students then had an opportunity to get signatures and have photos with the rugby player. The visit has since featured on TV3 news and Sports Tonight, The Press and Christchurch Mail (Christchurch Newspapers).

The School continues to support Bridget in her recovery and invites your prayers. Bridget says CanTeen has been inspirational and so supportive in helping me through this time in my life. It was a privilege to have Dan Carter come to our school and was lots of fun! I have also had huge support from our school and church communities for which I am so grateful! God continues to help me get through my Leukaemia, and most of all I am thankful to Him! It was awesome being able to be baptised last January (as soon as I was well enough) to publicly declare my love for God and how I depend on Him.
