We Learn

 Educating for Eternity

Our Learning Environment

Year 1 is where the journey begins; the beginning of thirteen years of formalised education. Because learning begins the day a child is born, by the time they arrive at school they already have a wealth of knowledge and understandings in place. Our education program at Christchurch Adventist School builds on this knowledge base and assists students to establish connections between what they know and experience and what they will discover in the classroom. We maintain small classes so that teachers can get to know the individual needs of each child. Building on a solid foundation in literacy and numeracy, we enable all of our students to discover and develop their special gifts and talents. We challenge each student to discover his/her particular gifts and talents in a variety of ways and we believe that each child is unique and special. Our qualified and experienced teachers recognise that each child learns at a different rate and in a variety of different ways, and are therefore able to facilitate learning so that each child reaches their full potential in their own time.

Essential Learning Areas

Our program is distinct; it is tailored to meet the need of individual students. Where needed, one-on-one and small group support is available and our multi-grade classrooms allow for extending talented students. Whilst our approach to education is a holistic one, when it comes to academics, our emphasis is on our students achieving their personal best. We provide a thorough grounding in key learning areas and offer a challenging curriculum that gives our students an excellent educational basis to build upon.

Our Essential Learning Areas (ELA) are:

• Christian Living

• English

• Mathematics & Statistics

• Science

• Technology

• Social Sciences

• The Arts

• Health and Physical Education

Sports

Christchurch Adventist School students are offered an extensive range of sporting opportunities in both Primary and Secondary School. These opportunities have led to representation on a local, national and international level for students who excel in their chosen field of expertise. Weekly interschool programmes and lunchtime sports competitions are highlights for many students.

Music

CAS students are given many opportunities to learn music and also lead out in music. School Chapel programs provide a forum for students to display their talents and be part of a band. The Primary Choir performs at different events on and off campus, and the Secondary music groups perform at various events also. Itinerant music teachers are available through the school. Contact the Music Teacher for more information.

Camps

An essential component of each student’s educational experience at CAS revolves around the exciting and deliberate outdoor education program. The School provides various school camps, tramps and field trips throughout the year. Throughout these events, students gain a greater sense of their place in our global community; they also develop significant character qualities that encourage them to make a difference in their world.

Revolution

REVOLUTION is a Christchurch wide, quarterly Friday night program, run for teens by Grants Road Ministry, initiated by the CAS Chaplaincy and Youth Department. REVOLUTION (formerly called FUSE) was birthed in 2009, and born out a desire and God-given vision to create a cutting-edge ministry event where teenagers can lead out and get involved, something they can be proud of and something they can bring their un-churched friends to. Funding has been provided by entities and church members who have caught this vision and want to see God work mightily in the hearts of the teens in Christchurch. We praise God for these incredible people and entities, who, from their generous hearts, make this event possible! The program that happens each quarter has a different theme, and the rest of the program and décor is built around this theme. Students are involved in every aspect of the program – the Leadership Team, music, creative arts, food afterwards, welcoming at the doors, advertising, lighting and sound, decorations, and photography (under the able guidance of our Chaplains). Kids Church Kids Church is an initiative run by Grants Road Ministry, and held quarterly. Our primary focus is to provide kids a fun, cutting edge, alternative worship experience to ‘normal Church’ where they get to not only have a special and ‘different to normal’ program catered just for them, but to most of all experience Jesus for themselves. Through Kids Church, in the last few years we have been training up to 20+ teenagers through Creative Arts Ministries, Leadership, ownership and service to others. Most of these young people also participate in Bible Studies, some have been baptised and others are doing studies towards baptism.
